Establishments

Ingham County was established in 1829 and as of 2023, has an estimated population of 282,015. Two prominent cities within the County include the City of Mason (the County seat) and the City of Lansing, the Michigan state capital. The County is named after former Secretary of Treasury, Samuel D. Ingham. As shown in Figure 1, the largest industry in Ingham County by number of establishments is Professional and Business Services (1,485 establishments) followed by Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (1,344 establishments).

An industry must have at least 483 establishments to be considered one of the top industries in Ingham County. Figure 2 presents these industries along with the growth in the number of establishments. Of the industries in that group, Professional and Business Services saw the fastest growth in the County, increasing 12% from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, all of the top industries experienced an increase in the number of establishments between 2022 and 2024.

Employment

Health Services & Private Education is the largest industry group by number of employees in Ingham County, and Government is the second largest industry (Figure 3). In fact, two of the top three industries by employment in the County have seen increases in employment since 2022. Additionally, six of the top eight industries have all experienced employment growth over the last two years.

By growth in employment, State Government, excluding Hospitals and Education saw the greatest change from 2022 to 2024 in Ingham County (Figure 4) at 10%. Employment in Public Administration also saw significant growth in Ingham County. In fact, the County outpaced Michigan and the nation with employment growth in this industry. However, Colleges and Universities saw a decline in employment in Ingham County.

Real GDP

The Federal Civilian industry tops the list in Ingham County as the industry with the highest GDP ($3,991,126,000), as shown in Figure 5. Finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing occupies a close second place ($3,928,917,000).

One way to visualize industry earnings in Ingham County is imagining all earnings from all industries as a hundred dollars. Of that hundred dollars, three of the top eight industries by earnings comprise $30. In total, those eight industries produce about $61. The remaining $39 is produced by all other industries, meaning that earnings in Ingham County are spread across a wide range of other sectors (Figure 6).
